Back-to-MAC is one of the longest-running beauty recycling programs in the industry. Return six empty MAC primary product containers to a MAC counter or via mail-in and pick a free lipstick, lipgloss, or eyeshadow. This guide covers how it works, what counts, and how to maximize the reward. MAC is our affiliate partner.

How it works

Bring six empty MAC primary product containers (lipstick tubes, eyeshadow pans, foundation bottles, mascara tubes, etc.) to any MAC counter or freestanding store. In exchange, choose one free MAC lipstick, lipgloss, or eyeshadow.

What counts as an empty

Primary product packaging only. Outer cardboard boxes, sample sizes, and promotional minis typically don't count. Eyeshadow palettes and refillable cases count as one empty per pan/refill.

Mail-in option

If you don't have a nearby MAC store, mail-in recycling is supported through the Back-to-MAC program — check the MAC site for the current shipping address and form.

Tips to maximize

Save empties from foundations, eyeshadows, and mascaras (the categories you finish fastest). Combine with an in-store visit so you can shade-match the free lipstick in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do Back-to-MAC online?

Mail-in is supported. The free lipstick reward is fulfilled per program terms — verify current process on the MAC site.

Do empty palettes count?

Yes — each empty pan in a refillable palette typically counts as one container toward your six.

Is there a limit to how often I can do it?

Generally no per-customer cap, but only one free product per six empties redeemed.
